Girl Blue
“The sky has been many shades of blue, but not mine.” Nann Tsehay’s first collection, Girl Blue is a poetic narrative about Black American girlhood. Centering key moments of her teenage years, Tsehay writes a personal account of the social pressures and issues Black girls face. This account of memories, observations, and affirmations shines light on misogynoir, depression, motherhood, abuse, and grief. Tsehay uses that same light to shine on the joys of childhood and the hope of healing. Written for Black girls who are expected to know better before they know themselves, Girl Blue jogs the memory should we ever forget who we are.
